“Just let me know when the next trip will be and I’ll be there. …one of the greatest, authentic travel experiences I’ve experienced.”

“We enjoyed every part of our trip to Jamaica with Dr. Z and loved your nurturing nature. We loved hiking to the Kwaaman and Tacky waterfalls and our day on the boat that Jesus arranged. We enjoyed learning about the different trees and plants along the way to two of the most awesome waterfalls we have seen. Snacking on the fresh coconut was a definite plus! All the meals were great and even though we were not hungry after dinner, we couldn’t resist eating more when meals were prepared at the point at night. Ken had a great birthday visiting Tacky Falls, Jamba’s farm, and the visit with Binto’s family on the way back to the resort. Lion’s cake was yummy and the blessing given to him by Jamba was so touching. Thanks for an awesome, unforgettable trip in an environment of nuturing, both from Dr. Z and the Jamaicans”.

Little did I know that this one invitation from my Naturopath would change my life. The trip spoke to me as a practicing Herbalist. It was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss, and am glad I didn’t. I learned so much about the medicine, the bush. Yet I only touch the ecotones of Jamaica and the Rastafarian life. We loaded into the grooviest little bus after a red eye flight. The drive to the campground was rich in scenery, and being surrounded by plant enthusiasts we pointed out and talked about all the medicinals we spotted along the way. We weren’t even in the jungle yet and I was already meeting so many new plant allies.

We arrived at the grounds where the ocean met the jungle. There’s this sweet little cove, where I soon found myself swimming in every moment of the inbetween plans. We gathered to introduce ourselves and meet the “boys”, our guides, teachers and friends. They became my Rastifarian tribe. The nights always ended around the fire, playing our drums, cooking a second dinner, drinking our tea and dancing until the moon was over our heads. We’d watch it rise from the equator, it was red like the fire. The point, where we met each night, was a portal. Whatever and whoever wasn’t there would simply melt and it was only the music, the nature and the souls who gathered. I woke up most days before the sun would rise and connect with elements and the tides. Each day was rich with knowledge, exploration and adventure. We hiked into the bush gathering for the medicine and food to be made for our stay. The meals were amazing, all traditional Jamaican food, filled with Ackee and Breadfruit. Dr.Z extended all that he knew, Dr.Chim and her passion for the plants shined through. Lion would sing and come up with the most creative new tunes. Each person who was there brought something special to the magic of the experience we shared. I can go into every little detail that still rings in my heart. The truth is I made a lifelong family that I yearn to return to. The land has so much to teach us, the Rastafarians carry so much wisdom, the language of Patwa is a language I never heard of and now love. It took a bit of time to understand, but when you slow down and listen I’ve found it’s more of speaking from the heart than mind. (Or just ask Dr.Z and he’ll fill you in) I’ve come to appreciate my body’s ability to walk for miles and miles to reach the most breathtaking spots and to be able to do it again the next day.

I have so much gratitude for the teamwork and collaboration to put an offering like this together. I learned so much about the history of Jamaica and the abundant medicine it holds and offers. Prior to, I had no clue how it came to be the culture and island it is today. It’s an island I call home now. And I truly can not wait to return next March, and the one after that. I never thought I could love so deeply and learn so much in what we declare a short period of time. I have gratitude for the guest speakers and teachers who have a relationship with the plants, the culture and impact the medicine, while holding onto traditions. I truly can not thank the “boys”, Dr.Z, Kismet and Dr.Chim and all the healers and students who joined this journey into the bush enough.

I now get to take this experience and continue to deepen my relationship to the earth and all the beings who walk upon Her. To have that connection is power, to be in relationship with what heals you is a gift and a right. I pray to never take the abundance of the medicine that surrounds us for granted and this trip was a gift to see all that is provided for me, for humanity. We just have to listen, respect and appreciate.

Thank you Jah! – Clara, Connecticut.
